Girls soccer nets seven in Senior Night romp

To the excitement of the parents, there wasn't much drama on senior night last Tuesday night at Parkland High School.

Hannah Gombos volleyed a thigh ball into the back of the net off of a Jill O'Connell cross from a Camille Roberts through ball into the corner. The senior connection put the Trojans up 4-0 and the team was able to rest easy and enjoy a 7-0 Lehigh Valley Conference win against Northampton.

Gombos tallied three goals, O'Connell added a goal and two assists, and Roberts contributed a goal and an assist for a much needed tune up for Thursday's showdown at rival Whitehall, a team the Trojans are all too familiar with.

"It was easy for us to get the diagonal passes and through balls that make us successful," Gombos said. "We came out strong and we knew what we had to do to put goals away. We played really well."

Parkland (15-2-1, 11-1-1) came out firing on all cylinders from the opening whistle. Gombos and Kiera Kaunas forced quick saves from Shelby Herstine just three minutes in.

The Trojans breakthrough came with six minutes passed. Kaunas dribbled down the left flank and sent a cross into the box. O'Connell trapped the ball at her feet, turned and fired into the back of the net.

Roberts' goal, and two goals apiece from Gombos and Sara Posocco gave Parkland a comfortable six-goal cushion going into halftime.

The rest of the game the Trojans played possession and worked the passing game.

Parkland's defense also tallied a clean sheet for the sixth straight game, and haven't been scored on since a 3-1 win over Nazareth on September 22.

"Our forwards follow the ball and they make great runs to the post," said O'Connell. "Defensively we tried to keep things simple, and not just blasting the ball. Playing simple, playing to feet and getting to the ball first."

The girls now have a tough road ahead of them, but one that could be rewarding if they continue to play as strong as they did Tuesday night.

A road trip to Whitehall on Thursday night is followed by the Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs next week, and then the District 11 tournament the following week.

"We need to work on our attitude before the game," said O'Connell. "Sometimes we get a little bit intimidated because it's a big game. We work on defense first, and then the offense will follow."
