Freedom test looms large
The Parkland football team may have rolled through two elite Lehigh Valley Conference opponents the last two weeks, outscoring Whitehall (4-2) and Nazareth (4-2) 94-44, but head coach Jim Morgans knows his team needs to stay focused facing a tough Freedom Patriots team this Friday night during homecoming weekend.
"It's nice to be winning," Morgans said. "It's a lot easier to build off a win compared to off a loss. But we have to turn the page and move on. We realize as coaches that Freedom is a very good football team. Their losses are to good teams and they were good football games. They have real good personnel. They would love to knock us off, so if our kids come in thinking Freedom is going to lay down and roll over for us they're out of their mind."
The Trojans offense can put up points with the best of them, but it's been the defense that has been the backbone of this team lately. It has held some explosive offenses in check the last two weeks, and that has proven pivotal to vault near the top of the league standings.
"The defense has been awesome," said Morgans. "They've been giving us the ball back a lot. Against Northampton [four weeks ago] we had a whole bunch of penalties, we turned the ball over several times, but our defense kept us in that football game. They've kept us in every game.
"Yes, we've given up points, but we've also been playing pretty good football teams who are capable of scoring. They're giving our offense the ball in good field position. Our offense is getting better and better too."
Freedom is coming off a disappointing 25-21 loss to Easton last Friday night. The Patriots were in control of the game, and led 21-13 late in the third quarter, but gave up two late touchdowns to seal their fate.
Senior quarterback Brian Uliana threw for three touchdowns and he brings a similar aerial threat that the Trojans defense saw from Whitehall quarterback Nick Shafnisky two weeks ago. Uliana also has two big targets to throw to in 6-0 receiver Josh Young and 6-2 Marcqwell Brown, who each caught a touchdown pass last week.
"Uliana is one of the best quarterbacks in this conference no question," said Morgans. "He's a big kid and this is his second or third year starting. He has some good receivers and tough running backs with good speed. Their perimeter defenders are tough and hard to block. They do an outstanding job of getting off blocks. It is going to be a heck of a challenge for us."
