Frederick keeps busy Involved in volleyball, soccer and band

Simply speaking, Alissa Frederick is busy young woman.

This fall, Frederick is playing both volleyball and soccer, mainly due to the latter sport's switch to the fall season. When she isn't on a court or a field, Frederick can usually be found two days a week rehearsing her role in the school's marching band.

Aside from those activities, Frederick is also involved in a myriad of school activities and other as well, including taking piano lessons and being an active part in school dramas.

Yet, the senior wouldn't want it any other way.

"I enjoy sports and being active," said the senior. "Right now, volleyball is my main sport and I have been focusing on making as many games as I can, and it has worked out well. I have also played soccer for a while and try to get to those games."

Taking an urge from volleyball teammate Lauren Pluchinsky to try the sport four years ago, Frederick has developed a real passion for the sport. After having a 60-game losing streak snapped on the final game of last season, Frederick and the rest of the Roughies' senior core are enjoying the benefits of a seven-win season through Tuesday's play.

They also realize making districts might be a long shot, but it is still worth the effort.

"We are playing together more as a team and we realized we can do that when we started to pick up some wins," Frederick said. "It's really a bittersweet time right now for us seniors because we see that the program is headed in a good direction.

"We had a couple of coaches over the years and that didn't help. We needed to have stable coaching like we have now. If we had the situation in the past as we have now, it would have been a different program."

Frederick and her upperclassmen have quickly adjusted to the style of first-year head coach Lindsey Arndt, a former standout in the Roughies' program.

"She (Arndt) really knows the game and has taught us how to win," Frederick said. "Having her as a coach this year will make leaving the program difficult."

Her coach shares the same admiration for her player.

"Alissa has just been so focused this year," Arndt said. "She (Frederick) is a really hard worker that leads by her examples. (Frederick) is always trying to do something to help the team."

After graduation, Frederick would like to continue her volleyball career at either the collegiate or intramural level at Delaware Valley College. While there, she plans to study animal science to pursue her aspirations as a possibly zoo keeper or related field relating to animal care.

"Ever since I was little, I have always enjoyed working with animals," she said. "I want to work with them in some way. I'd also like to play volleyball at some level."

When she does have some extra time, Frederick is a member of the school's Varsity Club, green team, and a member of the National Honor Society. She began her musical career in fourth grade with the clarinet and then switched to the piano in seventh grade.

"I have always enjoyed playing sports and have tried every one," stated Frederick. "I played basketball up until high school. It has been fun and I'd like to keep all of my activities going as well."

If she maintains her drive, Frederick will surely find the time.
