CHS tops Bangor to stay unbeaten
The story continues. This time, though, the Roughies vanquished one of the monsters from the north.
For a moment or definitely two, Catasauqua head football coach Tom Falzone had to stop to cherish the moment. His team had raised its record to 6-0 on the season with a convincing 35-14 victory over previously undefeated Bangor.
"We feel really good right now," said the fourth-year head coach whose clubs reached their recent pinnacle for the first time in his Catty coaching career. "It was really a heckuva high school football game.
"We had a lead in the fourth quarter, but we knew we needed more. When they got close, I said to myself, 'Oh, here we go.'" But these kids are so resilient. They just kept coming."
And the story continued.
It is a remarkable tale in which the Roughies incredibly have accumulated 241 total points and allowed a measly 31 in six games. Although Bangor gained the most total yardage (325) and scored the most points by any opponent (14) this season.
Yet, it was another offensive explosion in which initially primary weapon Ra'Von Burton appeared to be slowed by a high ankle sprain. Burton responded with a game-high 241 yards and his 60-yard scamper was his 10th touchdown of the season.
Quarterback Zack Bradley continued his assault through the air as he effectively and efficiently completed eight of 19 attempts for 244 yards and three touchdowns. The Roughies air show of Alex Parker and Paryss Marshall were again flying high as they had a combined six catches for 202 yards.
It also was another big game for the Roughies offensive line as they again met the challenge of facing an opposition that was larger than them.
"I'm just so happy and proud of what those guys did for us again," said Falzone of his unit up front. "They again proved how their quickness has been effective this season. They created holes for our backs and gave Zack (Bradley) the time he needed."
Defensively, Catty stopped Bangor on four fourth-down attempts.
"We made the big stops when we had to," added Falzone about his defense. "Bangor pushed us and tried to punish us, but we hung in there with them. They came right at us with their running game, and we stopped them on big plays."
So, what is ahead for the Roughies this week? Another monster to conquer from the north: Pen Argyl.
Catty will travel to Pen Argyl Saturday to face a 5-1 team coming off a 41-28 victory over Northern Lehigh.
In that game, quarterback Ryan Hunt had a solid game with seven completions from 10 attempts for 214 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Running back Mike Racciato, the team's workhorse all season long, rushed for 162 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in the victory and he and backfield mate Mike DePaoulo have formed a formidable duo.
Falzone sees the game as his team's biggest hurdle of the season.
"This will be our biggest challenge," said Falzone. "We know Bangor was a big mountain to climb for us, but this will be bigger. To me, Pen Argyl poses more threats than Bangor to us and they are bigger than they (Bangor) are.
"They (Pen Argyl) had their only loss a few weeks ago, and they have been playing well since. It also throws our routine off since we have to play a Saturday game there. But this also gives us another day and helps us mend a bit."
It is also a crucial game in reference to the District 11 Class AA playoff pairings. A loss to Pen Argyl could unseat the Roughies from the top spot and potentially cause further trouble down the road. Catty will also face another test to their district rankings with a future date with Northern Lehigh. Palisades, who the Roughies soundly defeated, 40-0, earlier, has also vaulted themselves into the district picture with three consecutive wins.
"It is a big game for us," Falzone reiterated. "Our defense will have to step up again and our offensive line will be faced with another challenge. We also need to start faster than we have been. We are a better team when we can do that.
"We're healthy and we'll be ready. We need to continue to do what we can do. It has been a nice run for us so far."
And, in all likelihood, the story will continue.
