Board welcomes new teachers

When the 2012-13 school term began, 9,265 students began another year of education in Parkland schools guided by the theme, "Fostering Re-siliency, Transforming Education, Shaping the Future."

Enrollment figures include 3,199 young people at the high school; 2,304 at the middle schools; and 3,762 at the elementary level.

The numbers are nearly the same as those from the 2011-12 term.

The new student representative to the board is Charlene Jean, who was selected last spring through a rigorous application review.

High school Principal James Moniz offered comments on her abilities.

"Charlene is an entertaining, well-spoken, creative senior who is taking a full load of advanced placement courses," said Moniz.

At the Sept. 18 board meeting, administrators introduced teachers who are new to the staff.

Superintendent Richard Sniscak reported those who were ultimately hired survived a lengthy screening process from a large pool of applicants.

"These people went through multiple interviews to get to this point," Sniscak said.

Pam Kelly, director of human resources, said the group of new teachers is smaller than usual this year because of fewer open positions.

Many of the new employees are covering for teachers who are on leave.

She said the newcomers include graduates of 18 different colleges, while 30 percent of them already have master's degrees.

"The administrative team was dedicated to hiring the very best," Kelly said.

Following the introductions, the new teachers and board members had some time to get acquainted while enjoying punch and cookies.
