Weigel clutch in win over Becahi

A 42-match Lehigh Valley Conference winning streak and the state's number two ranking was on the line Tuesday night for the Parkland girls volleyball team late in the third game against Bethlehem Catholic.

Fortunately for the Trojans, so was Alicia Weigel.

Down 24-22 and tied at a game apiece with the unbeaten Golden Hawks, Weigel ripped off four straight sizzling jump serves to ignite the Parkland fans and rally her team to a 26-24 win. The momentum turn stunned Becahi and led the Trojans to a 3-1 win (18-25, 25-10, 26-24, 25-15), after dropping the first game for the second Tuesday in a row.

"I was really nervous for sure," Weigel said. "I just took a deep breath and was relying on it to go over.

"I normally start out jump serving, but I had been staying down because I wasn't making them. But [assistant coach Debbie Tice] told me, 'Jump. You've got it, you can do it.' So it's all thanks to her."

Tice's call proved to be a big one. Weigel's serve was nearly impossible to handle, resulting in three straight aces to give Parkland a 25-24 lead - its first since 13-12 in the game. She then watched as Veronica Koval feathered a kill over a Becahi block to put the game away and deflate the Golden Hawks, who entered the game as the only other LVC unbeaten.

Weigel's serving was a key to the win, but she also turned the match with her hitting. In an error-filled first game, Weigel had just one kill as the Trojans trailed from the start. She came alive with five kills as the Trojans took game two and finished the match with 17 kills on 21 attempts. She knocked down three kills in the last five points to put the match away.

"We're confident," Weigel said. "We know if we lose the first one its just because we're all jumpy and we're pumped. It's a little bit of nerves. But once we get through that, we know we have it."

Head coach Mike Krause recognized the nerves early on and took some time to find the right mix on the court. Krause made the most of his timeouts, calming his team and seeing immediate responses.

The coach called his second timeout with his team down 23-13 in the first game. The Trojans responded with a 5-1 run, but lost the game. In the third game, he called a timeout after three straight errors left his team down 16-13. The girls responded again by winning five of the next six points.

His final timeout came down 23-20 in the third game. The Trojans took six of the final seven points that time, including Weigel's incredible run.

"I was just trying to get them to settle down," Krause said. "They were so pumped up and just all over the place. It took a while to find out who could settle in and then let the rotation take over."

The win came a day after the Trojans ascended to second in the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association poll on the strength of their victory at the Little Lion Invitational in State College on Saturday. Parkland went 6-1-1 in its matches, defeating then-number three Hempfield in a rematch of last year's state championship game in the final. The Penn State-bound duo of Taylor Krause and Kelly Robertson shared MVP honors.

The Trojans travel to Hempfield for another tournament this weekend, then take on Central Catholic, fifth-ranked Southern Lehigh and Nazareth in a three-day stretch next week.

"I know where we're at," Krause said. "We're getting better and better and we're getting more consistency. The younger players are more comfortable and more confident and that's what we were waiting for."
