Peng, Pham get redemption at LVC tourney
Neither Jenna Peng nor TuQuyen Pham looked at last season's Lehigh Valley Conference tennis tournament as a success.
The top two singles players for the Parkland tennis team the past two seasons, the juniors both earned silver medals during the 2011 tournament. Both came in focused on gold in 2012.
Despite some tough spots, both players came out victorious to lead the Trojans to another conference tournament title at Parkland High School on Monday.
"I really wanted to win this time around and people were expecting me to win," Peng said. "It definitely put a lot of expectation and pressure on me."
Peng handled the pressure well in her first two matches, dispatching Easton's Cynthia Blay (8-0) and Freedom's Flannery Johnston (10-2) in short order.
But against Allen's Jelena Bujic, Peng's focus was tested when several shots that were apparently inbounds were called out. A judge was assigned to the match and after the match was tied at 6-6, Peng pulled away for a 10-6 victory.
"I think I could have played better," Peng said. "The pressure definitely got to me and I was a little tight especially the last match. But I think it was a good learning experience and I'll be able to improve on it in districts."
Pham also has a head of steam heading into districts.
She cruised through the second singles portion of the LVC tournament, besting Madison McCall 10-3 in the final.
"I am definitely playing a lot better," Pham said. "I was really proud of how I played today. My serve was definitely working. I've been practicing since the end of the regular season and its starting to pay off."
Pham hopes her high-level play continues this week at the District 11 tournament, which begins on Friday at West End Racquet Club.
Peng grabbed the top seed for the event. She squares off against Southern Lehigh's Naomi Li in the first match and has seeded players Johnston (fourth), Bujic (fifth) and Bangor's Ashley Jones (eighth) on her side of the bracket.
Pham will have a more difficult as the seventh seed. She opens with Pleasant Valley's Madison Olexson and then gets the winner of a showdown between number one players Kaitlyn John (Liberty) and Kelly Nguyen (Emmaus). If Pham can advance to Saturday's play, she'll likely have to go through East Stroudsburg South's twin sister duo of Brittany Poje (second seed) Kaitlyn Poje (third seed).
Brittany Poje reached the district final last year, defeating Pham 6-4, 6-2 in the quarters and Peng 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. She lost to Freedom's Marielle McIntyre in the final.
The Poje sisters teamed up to win the district doubles title over Peng and Pham last season.
"I plan to play well at districts," Pham said. "There are a lot of good players there and I'd like to make it a little further than I did last season."
