Golf trio qualifies for district tourney
Each year of high school golf, Parkland's Mike Perkins has advanced one step further in the postseason. This year he continued his progress by making it through the District 11 Championship Qualifier to advance to next week's championship tournament.
"I played pretty good," said Perkins. "The conditions were pretty tough. It was windy. I hit the ball pretty straight and hit a lot of greens."
As a freshman, he missed out on district qualifying. Last year he posted an average low enough to get into the qualifier, but shot 93 at the event and was a few strokes off the qualifying number.
Now a junior, Perkins continued his progress by shooting five-over par 77 at this year's qualifier, held Monday at Woodstone Golf Club in Danielsville. He tied for the third-lowest score among Class AAA players at the qualifier and leads a list of three Parkland golfers that will move on to next week's championship tournament.
"I was just trying to break 80 because I thought the cut was going to be around 85," said Perkins. "I just put together a good round."
Perkins made 13 pars, one birdie, four bogeys and a double bogey, which came on his first hole of the day. He didn't let a slow start change his game plan.
"I was four over (par) through five holes and then played the rest of my round one over," said Perkins. He learned at last year's qualifier to "just keep playing no matter how high your score is because it's usually a high score at district qualifying."
This year marked the first time that high school golf's postseason events are broken up into Class AA and AAA. From Monday's qualifier, the top 20 scores in Class AAA advance to the district championship, while the top 18 in Class AA move on. A total of 53 players competed in Class AAA while just 33 played in the AA event.
Monday's cut for Class AAA was 85, while the Class AA score was 92.
Eamon Marone of Notre Dame (Green Pond) shot the day's lowest score at 73. Northampton's Evan Notaro, the 2010 district champ, shot the low round in Class AAA with a 75.
Joining Perkins at districts next week will be Trojan teammates and fellow juniors Chad Hess and Adam Sutovich.
Hess was playing in his third straight qualifying tournament and looking for his second straight trip to districts. Last year, he shot 121 at the 27-hole district championship, which was good for 11th place. With the top 10 going to regionals last year, Hess was the alternate.
Sutovich made his first appearance at the qualifier and will advance to his first district tournament.
The district championship will be held next Monday at Shawnee Golf Course. The top six boys in each class and top three girls in each class will advance from districts to the PIAA East Regional Tournament a week later at Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood.
