Field hockey getting close to playoff berth

Catty field hockey traveled to Saucon Valley on Saturday morning and won by a score of 1-0 over the Panthers.

Most of the first half the ball was on the Lady Roughies offensive end. Catty had some nice give-and-go passes and moved the ball efficently. Rachel Peters scored on an unassisted blast into the goal with 17:12 left in the the first half.

The Rough Riders had a few opportunities to score in the game but came up short.

"Today, we played very solid. In the second half, Saucon Valley was pressing to tie the game up," said Catty keeper Janae Matos. "Although our defense let up 21 corners, they stopped the Panthers, allowing only 10 shots on goal. This is our third shut out win in a row. We are now down to needing only two wins to clinch a berth in District 11 playoffs."

Saucon Valley had a higher work rate at the net than Catty High. The Red and Black almost double up Catasauqua with 10 shots to six and 20 corners to Catasauqua's 11.

The Panthers goal keeper Dominuque Dziadowz equaled Janae Matos stops with six.

Before Catty High's field hockey game with Palisades, first year CHS coach Carrie Saul told the Rough Riders not to get caught ball watching.

Palisades is aggressive and Catty got in trouble with leading passes going too far and not using players who were close by. Palisades Beth King stopped runs by Erika Lebron and Hannah Edwards at 16:40 and 16:00 respectively. There was a lot of action in front of the goal by Megan Covert and Paige Kogelman.

Palisades was seeing the ball better on their sticks. Catty's Bailey Kudla-Williams, Shea O'Brien, along with Colleen Hickey, kicked up the intensity on defense, though.

Erika Lebron poked the ball to Kogelman who shot with 10 minutes to play. Hannah Edwards was unsuccessful with her shot with 7:30 to play in the first half.

Defensively, Catty junior Rachel Sell turned the ball upfield towards the Lady Pirates goal. And, O'Brien helped Janae Matos with a deflection.

Catty wasn't following their shots until Erika Lebron scored on an unassisted goal with 2:18 left in the first half at CHS.

In the second half Catty could have used more passes upfield. Rachel Peters and Quinn Bachman pushed up to Kogelman.

The Pirates were tight on Lebron, so Kogelman found Colleen Hickey waiting on Palisades doorstep for the score with 2:32 to go to make it 2-0.

Catasauqua had 16 shots compared to the Purple and Gold's five. CHS Janae Matos recorded all five saves. Megan Hughes made 14.
