LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Zephyrs up next

The Parkland football team is coming into a rivalry game on a high note. The Trojans are riding a two-game winning streak, with a trip to Whitehall on Friday night.

"Winning makes practice a lot easier," said head coach Jim Morgans. "Whitehall is a big rivalry game with Parkland, and the kids are very excited about playing them. I think it's a big game whatever the case, but riding a two-game win streak makes it even more of an exciting game."

Whitehall brings an explosive offense to the field. Quarterback Nick Shafnisky is committed to play at Lehigh next fall, and has been the focal point of the offense. He has some key playmakers to get the ball off too in wide out Nick Sommer and running back Ryan Bonshak.

"We're aware of the talent they have," said Morgans. "They are a good football team offensively and they do a real nice job. But we're playing pretty good defense here in the last couple of games. Our defensive coordinator Tim Moncman is doing a great job preparing the kids. It's going to be a challenge, but I think our kids are up for this challenge."

The Trojans defense is coming off two straight shutout wins over Northampton (28-0) and Liberty (28-0). A third consecutive shutout is a tough task to ask, but Morgans feels his defense is playing some of its best ball now.

"I thought that are kids are finally playing the way that they are capable of playing," said Morgans. "If they continue to do what they're doing, then I think we're capable of playing good football with anybody."

Parkland (2-2, 2-1) also has a high-powered offense of its own. The three-headed monster of Tim Baranek, Jarel Elder, and Eli Redmond each tallied a touchdown in last week's win against the Hurricanes. They will need to do the same, and more to beat a good Zephyrs defense.

After the opening loss to Easton, the Trojans continue their climb back to the top of the LVC standings. A win Friday night, would greatly help achieve this.
