Tennis slams K-Kids in unbeaten showdown

There aren't many matches for the Parkland girls tennis team to get excited about and its tough to blame them. After stomping Lehigh Valley Conference competition for the past 64 matches, winning becomes routine.

But facing an unbeaten Northampton team last Thursday, the Trojans had something to prove.

"The whole team was more focused today then they've been all year," head coach George Grim said. "We've gone to some matches where it's a pretty foregone conclusion. But today they got up for it and played well."

The Trojans showed why they're a cut above, winning every match in straight sets for a 7-0 victory. The K-Kids did give Parkland a scare in some early matches though.

Both the second and third singles matches were in doubt toward the end of the second sets. At two singles, Northampton's Madison McCall held a 5-4 lead on TuQuyen Pham, who won the first set. While on the next court, Avery McCall led her second set 4-3 over Parkland's Colleen Wylie. Wylie had also taken the first set.

"I tried to stay more consistent and tried to think about winning for my team more than myself," Wylie said. "I knew every match counts when its this close."

Wylie battled back to win the final three points and score a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Pham drew some inspiration from her singles teammate. Just a few moments after seeing Wylie pull off her comeback, the Trojans' second singles player turned her game up to turn her 5-4 deficit into a 7-5 second-set win. It was the first loss of the year for Madison McCall.

"It's nice that we all support each other and root for each other," Pham said. "I was definitely cheering Colleen on and she was doing that for me."

Another key win game at second doubles, where Nina Bajwa and Kendall Gedeon played their best match of the year to score a 6-2, 6-3 win. It was the first loss of the season for Northampton's Maureen Weaver and Leah Hodge.

"I thought we would win certain matches, but others were toss ups," Grim said. "They came through and we did really well."

The teams of Lauren Knafo and Rachel Wong, and Joy Wang and Anna Qiu were 6-0, 6-0 winners, while Shweta Sen and Shelby Knafo won 8-0.
