Students learn about various activities at fair
Every year, Parkland High School hosts a student involvement fair for freshmen.
This informative event takes place during the first few weeks of school and allows students to view all of the clubs offered throughout the year.
"I think the student involvement fair is the perfect way to introduce freshmen to all of the great opportunities at Parkland," senior Odyssey of the Mind Club member Shannon Homa said. "It is an easy way for them to sign up and learn what each club has to offer." Each club has something unique to offer all students. Whether you like planning activities, writing or volunteering within your community, there is a club for everyone."
Freshman Hannah Hakim offered her thoughts on the fair.
"If you like performing arts, there is a performing arts club," Hakim said, adding she liked the fact the fair offered the chance to find a club that incorporates activities of special interest to students.
As an incoming student, teachers and upperclassmen know it can be hard to take in all options Parkland has to offer.
"I think [the fair] gives students an opportunity to get involved in all interest levels…" American History teacher Ellen Snyder said. "There are clubs that give them a view of the wider world around Parkland."
By attending the fair, students can narrow down their options of 63 clubs to just a handful that truly interest them.
Each club has a display with informational material regarding meetings and events.
"The ping pong club had a ping pong table set up, which made me want to go," freshman Ben Hawk said.
During the fair, Ben signed up for the ping pong club, fitness team and plans on attending the informational meeting for ski club.
Any students who may have missed the involvement fair, are not sure how to become involved, or want to know more about a club, may visit Parkland's club listing at parklandsd.org.
