Roth finishes 22nd at LVC
The Lehigh Valley Conference Golf Tournament was held Monday at Allentown Municipal Golf Course.
Whitehall's Mark Roth led the Zephyr contingent with an 85, tying for 22nd place in a field of 73 boys players.
Roth, a senior who averaged a team-low 77 this season, was hoping to shoot a mid-70s round, which would have put him in medal contention.
"It could have been a bit better," he said after his round. "I had some errant shots out there. I could have made a few more putts. It also could have been a lot worse, though."
The boys played from 6,546 yards in a swirling wind that lasted through the morning and into the afternoon.
"The wind did drop the distance on the ball a bit and I had trouble finding yardages all day," Roth said.
He will move on to Monday's District 11 Class AAA qualifying tournament at Woodstone Golf Course. The top 20 players in AAA will make the next week's district championship tournament, a 27-hole event scheduled to be played at Shawnee Golf Resort.
Roth has his goals mapped out for each of the next two tournaments.
"Try and shoot in the 70s," he said. "Get through district qualifying, into districts and possibly get to regionals."
Roth played in last year's qualifier, held at Schuylkill Country Club. He missed a spot in district by two strokes. That experience could help him this year.
"I learned to keep a level head and just play my game," Roth said.
Emmaus junior Grant Schumaker won Monday's LVC title, shooting even-par 72. He finished four strokes ahead of a four-way tie for second place.
"There are so many good players in this tournament," said Schumaker. "It feels really good to be on top.
"It was really tough. Most holes felt like they were into the wind. It played a lot longer than it usually does and I play here a lot."
Tied for second place and earning the silver medal by a match of cards was Northampton senior Evan Notaro. Emmaus Kyle Wambold, Parkland's Chad Hess and Nazareth's Bret Howley were also part of the three-way tie. Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado won the girls tournament. She shot 80 to beat Freedom's Helen Hsu by seven strokes.
Whitehall's Loran Pritchard shot 92 for fifth place in the girls tournament.
Jake Azakal also competed at leagues, shooting a 92. Patrick Glasgow (94), Rudy Romamyshyn (104) and Kyle Greenzweig (108) round out the Zephyrs contingent at leagues.
