Robertson, Krause hit milestones in victory
The Parkland girls volleyball found itself in a situation it hasn't been in all season in Tuesday night's contest against Emmaus.
The Trojans trailed for the first time this year after dropping the first game, 26-24, to the Hornets.
But after that opening game defeat, Parkland rallied back to take the next three games, 25-14, 26-24 and 25-14, to remain unbeaten on the season.
"It was nice because we had to get tested mentally," said head coach Mike Krause. "Just keep on playing and have confidence in what we do as a team. And we couldn't get settled in that first set and it showed."
In the match's critical third game, it was the Trojans who held off a late furious rally from the Hornets. After increasing a 15-14 advantage to 20-15 thanks to a number of big kills by senior Kelly Robertson and juniors Allora Atiyeh and Mary Zacher, the Hornets rallied back just a few points later.
Down 23-19, the Hornets scored the next five points to make it 24-23 and were poised to take a 2-1 lead.
But Krause and the Trojans responded immediately.
After tying it at 24-24, Krause aimed one of her team-high 54 assists in the direction of senior Alicia Weigel, who finished with the kill. On the next point, Krause once again set up Weigel, who this time lofted a perfectly placed ball just over the net for the decisive point.
"It was great to finish," said Krause. "That was a huge game to get so we don't go five."
Every time the Trojans (8-0, 7-0 LVC) needed a spark it seemed Krause who surpassed the 3,000th assist mark was setting up either Robertson (who recorded her 1,000th kill in the victory), Weigel, Zacher or Atiyeh.
"I've been with [Robertson and Weigel] last year," said Taylor Krause. "You just have a comfortability with the hitters. And tonight the other hitters finally stepped up. And I think it's the best that our juniors played, and they really needed to play. So they helped us win."
"That's quite a milestone," said coach Krause. "Taylor has been running the offense for three years as a five-one. And Kelly has been hitting the ball. So it's something that I don't know if that'll be done at Parkland again."
Although the Hornets (6-1, 5-1) got to within 18-14 of the fourth game, the offense came alive once again for the Trojans. They responded to score the final seven points, including two kills apiece by Weigel and junior Veronica Koval to end the match.
"It's a really good win because it's a huge rivalry every time we play Emmaus," said Taylor Krause. "They always come out really hard, especially against us. They're a great team, and they have a great setter that makes them so much better."
Robertson led the Trojans with 20 kills, while Weigel added 17 and Zacher had eight. Senior libero Callie Krajcir had 15 digs.
