Girls try to make a push

Tuesday's game at Salisbury was mostly an offensive game. Right from the start the offense went to work and had the ball on the Catasauqua side almost the whole first half.

With solid passing and consistent efforts, Catty finally scored with about seven minutes left in the half. Freshman Hannah Edwards had an incredible tip to get the ball in the cage and give the Roughs the lead.

It was all they needed as the Roughs won 2-0.

But, in the second half, the Lady Roughies went right to work on the offensive end again. About nine minutes into the second half Megan Covert blasted a bomb into the goal to make the score 2-0 .

Later in the second half, Catty's defense was put to the test as Salisbury turned on the pressure to mount a late charge. The defense, along with goaltender Janae Matos, proved that they were up to the test in holding off the Falcons.

The Falcons had eight shots on goal. The defense did an fantastic job of keeping the ball away from the keeper.

"With this win, we only need four more wins to qualify for District 11 AA playoffs," Janae Matos.

Catty improved its league record to 4-5.

Edwards said, "Katie and I have connected for goals in three of the last four games."

Janae Matos had 10 saves in the shutout victory.

Edwards is currently the team's leading scorer with five goals and four assists.

An unassisted goal by Dana Turner with 12:33 to play did in the Lady Roughies at home in a makeup game from last Tuesday against Moravian Academy. The girls lost 2-1.

Rachel Peters and Colleen Hickey pressured on defense.

Quinn Bachman was robbed of a goal at 7:42. The Lions felt threatened and Coach Bross called a time out and told her charges they need to punch it in from forward line.

Freshman Hannah Edwards took the ball the length of the field circled back to Megan Covert, but Catty had no luck. A high ball by Shea O'Brien and Moravian Academy ran right back at Janae Matos, who made a save with her leg pads.

Catty couldn't get off any clean shots. With a minute left, CHS coach Carrie Saul positioned Edwards at the 50-yard line in case of a chance for a breakaway run, but Edwards never had a chance as time ran out

Catty opened up with the lead. Junior Rachel Sell turned and sent a good ball with nice placement downfield to Paige Kogelman who went to Hannah Edwards and junior Katie Buczynski scored with 26:34 to play.

Moravian beat Catty to the ball and the Lady Roughies let them dribble at will. Madie Scheetz was aggressive, Natalie Drelles and Dana Turner and Louisa McCambridge were all involved in the attack.

Quinn Bachman a freshman for Catty kept the pressure on and got the ball to fellow frosh Edwards and fed it to Erika Lebron who sent a shot on goal.

Shea O'Brien and Colleen Hickey came back to help Catty keeper Janae Matos, who made a kick save. Michaela Waldrop played a few quality minutes in place of Katie Buczynski.

The Lions were ferocious after Janae Matos made three kick saves within five minutes. And, Brittany Onesto scored with 7:36 to play in the first half to tie the game.

A Catty goal was taken away with 3:14 to play.

The Roughies are feisty but are unlucky as of late falling to 3-6-1 overall and 3-5 in the Colonial League

The Rough Riders came out with a lot of heart and showed they really wanted to win a game against undefeated Southern Lehigh. The Lady Spartans are a state powerhouse in field hockey.

Through the first half, the score was 0-0.

Janae Matos who had 11 saves between the pipes said, "We were on the defensive end of the field a lot of the first half but still managed to gain some momentum in the final five minutes of the half."

Catty would eventually fall 3-0. Iamarie Ramos scored the first of two unassisted goals.

Freshman Hannah Edwards said, "We thought she was out of the circle, so Janae Matos let it go by her. The ref said she was in side of the circle so the goal counted."

Then shortly thereafter the Spartans struck again, this time it was speedy Maria MacDonald on a ball that deflected off a Catty player. And finally, MacDonald scored on a penalty stroke with five minutes left in the game.

"Despite the 3-0 final, this was definitely one of our better games," Matos said. "We played hard the whole sixty minutes and never gave up."

It would have been easy for the Lady Roughies to roll over, but districts is still possible for the Brown and White.

Catasauqua's defense let up 14 corners but didn't let a single goal in during those corners. The defense played extremely well, clearing the wall wide and sending it up field.

Catty beat Wilson 2-0 on their own pitch. It was the first shut out of the year for keeper Janae Matos.

Fellow junior Katie Buczynski had a goal in the first half on an assist from Hannah Edwards.

Edwards, a freshman had a goal in the second half to complete the scoring.

That win put the Roughs at 3-3 at the time.

"Today, as a team, we didn't play one of our better games, but it was just enough to get the win," Matos said.
