Football team blows by Canes, back to .500

It was a much happier scene on the field at Orefield Middle School last Friday night. Quarterback Tim Baranek recorded two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing), and the Parkland defense held Liberty in check for the Trojans first home victory, and second consecutive win, 28-0.

Parkland (2-2, 2-1) is finding its rhythm at the right time after two close losses the first two weeks of the season.

It took three quarters for the Trojans offense to score against Northampton two weeks ago, and they also started slow on Friday.

On the third offense series Baranek took matters into his own hands, finding a seam down the sidelines for a 36-yard run to the nine. Parkland scored on the next play thanks to a Jarel Elder run with 23 seconds left in the first.

"That was an adjustment made during the game," Baranek said. "The line did a great job blocking and opening up a great hole. My teammates always make plays, and that helped us to get into the end zone.

"We wanted to come out and send a message offensively. We're getting better and better, and need to be more consistent. Liberty was playing us tough, and we knew that if we just kept trucking at them, we would get them eventually. We had a good play and that led to others, and we got some momentum."

The Baranek scamper followed a great defensive play made by the Trojan secondary. On third and 18, Derek Byrd connected with K.J. Williams for a 20-yard catch. As Williams tried fight for yardage, Tanner Stengel stripped the ball and halted the drive.

On Parkland's next possession, a 21-yard hook up from Baranek to Andrew Fuehrer put the Trojans into the red zone. After a couple of runs from Elder and Zach Gurinowich, Baranek sneaked into the end zone from a yard out to give Parkland a two-score advantage that it would take to halftime.

Fans didn't even get back to their seats in time to catch the third score of the night as Eli Redmond returned the second half kickoff 91 yards.

Parkland's defense held down an explosive Hurricanes offense, that lost in shootouts to Whitehall (38-19) and Nazareth (49-42). Gurinowich recorded two sacks on the evening, Stengel recovered the first quarter fumble and almost picked off a fourth quarter throw, and Xavier Roden and Naze Haddad seemingly were in on every tackle made.

Baranek finished off the scoring with an 18-yard strike to Jarey Elder with 4:06 to go.

The win is huge for a surging Trojans team and drops Liberty to 0-4 on the season.

"We talked a lot about how big of a win this would be," said Baranek. "As a team, we just stayed tight and focused. Our coaches do a good job of getting us to play our game and not worry about what people say. We have good kids on this team that want to win every game. We feel good about this win, and Liberty is a better team than what their record shows. We just want to keep this moving. It doesn't matter who our opponent is, just come out and get a W."
