Second half goal keeps boys perfect
It was only a matter of time until the Trojans got on the scoreboard in Thursday's boys soccer matchup with Liberty.
Parkland dominated possession and shots, a hallmark to their young season thus far.
Nick Hutchinson slid a pass into the path of Logan Howell who directed a shot over the arms of Liberty goalkeeper Anthony Silva to give the Parkland boys soccer team a 1-0 Lehigh Valley Conference victory at home last Thursday afternoon.
"When Nick found me I just chipped a shot over the goalies shoulders and it went in," said Howell, a senior attacker. "He passed a through ball through the defense at the top of the 18 and I just ran onto it and chipped it over."
Maybe the only dilemma Parkland (5-0) has faced thus far is finishing shots. The Trojans are outshooting their opponents and keeping most of the possession on their offensive third for a majority of the game, but the shots just don't seem to break through.
That hasn't mattered, however, as one-goal wins against quality conference foes Liberty and Whitehall in a three-day span have kept the boys undefeated and at the top of the league through two weeks of the season.
"We have some high expectations as a team this year, we want to go far," said Howell. "With 15 seniors we want to do well. It's always good getting out to a fast start and synching as a team. We just need to work more on hitting the target as we shoot the ball."
Parkland was playing without some of their key players as seniors Nolan Hay and Matt Kleinhenz sat out due to injury.
With a scoreless first half behind them, the Trojans mounted an all-out assault on the Hurricanes defense in the second half. Once they finally broke through with the Howell goal, Parkland didn't try to sit back and defend. Shot after shot came at Silva, but most of them directly at him, or just missed the frame. Silva made eight saves on the game.
"We've been working at practice a lot on one-two touches, dropping the ball back, and switching the fields on points of attack," said Howell. "We've just been trying to play fast and not have them get a lot of touches on the ball."
Liberty found some life in the waning minutes of the contest. With under 10 minutes to go, the Hurricanes had a look inside the 18, but Parkland's senior goalie Jacob Gottwald stoned the effort, and prevented any other further damage by reeling it in to his chest. Gottwald stopped two shots on the day.
