Mazalewski making history at La Salle
Breanna Mazalewski's name is one you'll find throughout the La Salle University volleyball team's record books.
The senior libero entered her final season in sixth place in school history for total career digs with 1,041. While the number one spot on the list will continue to be occupied by Carolyn Judge with 2,080 career digs, Mazalewski's goal of climbing the ladder is happening before our eyes.
After 14 matches played this season, Mazalewski has tallied 220 digs on the season and jumped into third place in team history with 1,261 for her career. She's currently 36 digs behind fellow teammate Samantha Tulski (1,297) who's currently second in team history.
"The girl who is number one [Judge] she must've been unbelievable because she has an amazing amount of digs," said Mazalewski. "So I'm hoping to end second or third if I can."
She also holds the seventh and eighth best marks for digs tallied in a single season 396 in 2010 (seventh place) and 386 in 2011 (eighth place).
"Coming into it [libero] was a new position for me," said Mazalewski. "At first I was so nervous getting used to everything. Now I'm more comfortable in this position. I love playing it, and I'm happy to be able to leave my mark on La Salle."
While Mazalewski is a defensive specialist for the Explorers, that wasn't the position she occupied during her career at Parkland High School. As a 2009 graduate of Parkland, Mazalewski was an outside hitter for the Trojans. She was an all-state selection from that spot and totaled 253 kills in her senior season.
But one of her main goals was to play volleyball at the Division I level, so Mazalewski took on a new position in hopes of achieving that. Now, she can't imagine being anything but a libero.
"The college game is a totally different game," said Mazalewski. "My goal was to play Division I volleyball, and I knew that if I wanted to play I wasn't tall enough to be a hitter. So that's why I started working on my defense more, and trying to get my name out as libero. Now I can't even imagine hitting a ball. It's been such a change."
She's also left her mark on the Explorers by posting one of the nation's best service aces per set at one point last season.
"Last year at the begging of the season at one point, I was ranked 10th in the nation in service aces," said Mazalewski. "So now that's something I'm striving for to do well with my service aces again."
Mazalewski has virtually done it all. She's been a member of the All-LVC, all-district and all-state teams at Parkland. Now she'll go down as one of the greatest in La Salle history. But there's one more thing that would cap off her career.
"We play in a tough conference we play in the Atlantic-10," said Mazalewski. "A goal this year is to make it to the A-10 playoffs. We generally end up pretty low in the A-10.
"But we have five seniors this year and five incoming freshman. So we really have a lot of talent that we've been working with. Our team together has been so much more motivated this year than any other time that I've been here. So we really set a goal for ourselves to make it to the A-10 tournament. I'm hoping we can do that before I leave."
While Mazalewski might not have necessarily thought she'd be in the position she's in now, her hard work and dedication over the past four seasons will forever link her name with the Explorers.
"Honestly, I hadn't thought that far ahead in high school," said Mazalewski with a chuckle. "I'm happy with how I've played. I've tried to each year set small goals for myself to achieve and help the team as best as I can. Even my freshman year I was just happy to be on the court. So no, I guess I never foresaw leaving a mark like this."
