Girls record two straight clean sheets
Coming off of an 8-0 white wash of Dieruff in the Don Hunt Memorial Challenge over the weekend, the Parkland girls soccer team has had no problem finding the back of the net.
Monday night, it took seven shots before the Trojans notched their first goal of the night in a 6-0 non-conference win over Pottsville at home.
"We started off a little bit slow," said Hannah Gombos, a senior forward. "But when we play to feet and look to make diagonal runs that has seemed to help us get good looks on goal. We just need to do a little better job finishing."
Kiera Kaunas raced down the sidelines and was seemingly unmarked for a better part of the opening 20 minutes. Kaunas had four of the first five good looks at goal for the Trojans.
The breakthrough would happen when Taylor Coleman sent a pass to Jess Wetherhold at the top of the box. Wetherhold pulled it back away from the defender, took one dribble to the left, and hit it with the outside of her right foot past Pottsville goalie Sienna Smith with 26:40 left on the clock.
Ten minutes later, Gombos raced onto a through ball from Emily Luchansky and blasted a shot under Smith's arms.
"I got a nice ball from the side," said Gombos. "I took a touch and saw a defender in front of me so I played it around her. I just knew that I had to focus because that's been one of my problems lately. I just needed to put the ball where it had to go."
Parkland (5-2, 3-1) got a third goal in the half by Sara Posocco, on a feed from Wetherhold, who finished with two assists.
The Trojans stopped a six-game winning streak for the Tide (6-0-1), and approved to 2-1 in non-conference games. Parkland lost a tough one to Stroudsburg 2-1 last Friday in Stroudsburg.
"Our expectations for this game were really high because they came in 6-0," said Gombos. "We knew we really had to play well and finish, because that's been our problem lately, but we did that tonight."
Kaunas made amends for earlier misses with a goal nine minutes into the second half. Gombos and Jill O'Connell also added second half goals for the Trojans.
Parkland will travel down Cedar Crest Boulevard to square off with rival Emmaus on Wednesday night, and then host Freedom and Nazareth in back-to-back LVC games Friday and Saturday.
"We're going to probably work a lot on our crosses, focus on scoring and just playing really hard," said Gombos. "We need to leave our heart out on the field."
