LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Girls get through challenging week

It may have been a taxing week for the Whitehall field hockey team, but it was their opponents who ultimately paid the price.

After a tough week in which they faced a trio of talented league foes, the Zephs breathed a little sigh of relief, edging out Easton Area High School 3-2 to complete the sweep.

The home win against the Red Rovers extends their record to 6-1 and sets up a highly anticipated rematch against undefeated Emmaus High School on Tuesday. (That game was postponed due to weather).

As for Friday's win over Easton, head coach Emily Repsher said that the team had to reach deep in order to come out on top.

"We definitely gutted out a win today," said Repsher. "The first half we were looking very skillful, and I think in the second half our tough week of games got to us."

Repsher said that having that many games in a short span led them to "pushing it out" against the Red Rovers. She said that fatigue played a factor, but was happy they were able to overcome that exhaustion with those three wins.

"I'm glad we were able to do that," she said.

Repsher said that having so many games, combined with school and other extracurricular activities, can weigh on a team, and that they just "have to stay with it."

In the win, Laura Gerhard got the ball rolling, finding the back of the cage in the first half thanks to an assist by Kourtney Cunningham.

The Zephs went into the break nursing that one-goal lead, but needed those two second half goals by Kourtney and Kayla Cunningham to salt away the victory.

Repsher said the defense played a big role in the win.

"We were patient in the beginning, and we had some mistakes, but we were able to capitalize and get it out of our end," said Repsher.

As the last line of defense, goalkeeper Emily Graveno had six saves, earning another win as she takes a firm hold on the back line defense.

"Emily did wonderful today," said Repsher. "She had some awesome saves. I'm very proud of her, and it's great to have her back there for us."

She also said that their passing combinations in the back were another strong point, indicating they have some things to build on for next week.

In the prior games, the Zephs got goals from Kourtney Cunningham, Anne Klepeiss and Kayla Cunningham (2), to defeat the Trojans 4-1. Against the Blue Eagles, Kayla Cunningham scored a hat trick, while Klepeiss knocked in the other cage banger to give the Zephs a 4-2 win. Assisting on the goals were Sara Schannauer and Kourtney Cunningham.

Repsher said they're not going to look ahead, instead taking each game as it comes. Within that philosophy they'll be able to see what areas of their game they'll need to fix.

"Every game we find something we need to tweak, and to improve upon, just building every day toward the end of the season," said Repsher. "We don't want to take anything for granted."
