James P. Ewell, 87, of Macungie, formerly of Allentown and Philadelphia, died September 15, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Mary (Bradley) Ewell. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late James P. and Ellen (Anderson) Ewell.

He was a graduate of Northeast High School in Philadelphia and LaSalle University, and was a district sales manager for Uniroyal Corporation for many years until retiring.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield, as well as a former member of the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena, Allentown, and the Knights of Columbus.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Gabilan and the USS Pirahna submarines in the South Pacific. He was president and treasurer of the Lehigh Valley chapter of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II.

He was an active participant for over 50 years in the Philadelphia Mummers Parade.

He is survived by children, James P. of Oakland Calif., Mary Ellen and her husband Doug Strohl of Orefield, Nancy Kelley of Orefield, Theresa and her husband Dave Bahnick of Emmaus, Kenneth and his wife Lisa of Medford, N.J., Meg and her husband Eric Kranzley of Orefield, Robert and his wife Maria of Orefield, John and his wife Lynne of Maple Glen, Tim Kelley of Allentown; 22 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 1879 Applewood Dr., Orefield. Calling hours are 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, 16th and Hamilton Sts., Allentown, and before Mass at 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Thursday in the church.
