The Whitehall Exchange Club exists no more.

While disbanding, the organization, which met at Fellowship Community, disbursed its remaining funds to community groups and students.

"We gave $1,000 to the Whitehall High School Scholarship Fund. We also gave $1,000 each to the Whitehall Township Public Library and to the Coplay Public Library," said the former club's president, Dennis Sommer.

The 60-year-old club, a local affiliate of a national organization, has been experiencing both an aging membership and a decrease in new members. This led to the decision to disband, Sommer said.

"We could have lasted for another year, but that would have been it," he said. "We have 14 members, many in their 70s."

A signature of the club has been a program recognizing Whitehall High School students as Students of the Month. Also, during a program each May, the club honored the top 10 Whitehall High School students at the vocational/technical school located in Schnecksville.

"At programs where we honored the students, at our club dinner meetings or at the high school scholarship program at the high school, we appealed to the parents to join as members, but got no response," Sommer said.

In addition to helping students, the club was involved in raising funds for child abuse prevention.

Years ago, the Exchange Club sponsored the Miss Lehigh Valley pageant.

Club members are being courted by Exchange Clubs in the area, such as Northampton and Bangor, to join as members.
