Volleyball team gets by K-Kids
The Whitehall volleyball team experienced some ups and down this week as league play got into full swing.
The up was a five-game thriller against Northampton Area High School. The Zephs battled back from a two-game deficit, winning the last two games to seal the victory. The end result was a 25-23, 15-25, 14-25, 26-24, 15-12, toppling of the Kids to earn their first league win.
It was a roller coaster of emotions as they had to fight through that middle stretch that tested their resolve. Head coach Rob Garnder said the team stayed together and made sure not to lose focus.
"The girls kept their heads and spirits up," said Gardner. "They never gave up and never surrendered."
In that win, the Zephs were paced by Olivia Bobyak who had 12 kills and three blocks. Brooke Mellinger also had a strong game at the net, compiling nine kills and five blocks.
In addition to those two swatting the rock for points, Kori Kohler made sure the hitters were able to convert those opportunities by recording 32 digs. Kelsey Himmelwright was also prevalent on defense, accounting for 15 digs, while Rachel Harry had 12.
Earning the team's most valuable player honors for that match was Lindsey Hutterer who had a whopping 42 assists, said Gardner.
It was an exhilarating win, and both the team and coaches relished the moment.
"What a way to start the season," said Gardner.
That up was supplanted by a stumble against Nazareth Area High School on Monday as the Blue Eagles won the match in three games. While the Zephs gave their league foes a good battle, the netters from Nazareth proved too sharp, winning 25-15, 25-16 and 25-18.
The Zephs record now stands at 1-2 and they will look to get back on the winning track, taking on rival Parkland High School on Thursday, followed by a tough encounter against the 'Canes from Liberty this Friday.
