Two pedestrians killed

An accident on Race Street resulted in two fatalities and had Race Street closed from late afternoon to well past rush hour Monday. Among the responders at the scene was Han-Le-Co Fire Chief Robin Yoder.

"I can't tell you what happened because we really won't know anything until after the state police finish their investigation," he told The Press at the scene while the investigation was being conducted.

Pennsylvania State Police at Bethlehem are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, and who has not yet made a statement to police, to contact them at 610-861-2026.

At the accident scene, a Nissan Pathfinder was seen having come to a stop at the chain link fence that surrounds Lehigh Valley International Airport property along the south side of Race Street.

A utility pole had been struck and there were no skid marks visible on the roadway.

Yoder said there were four pedestrians in the area waiting for the LANTA bus at a bus stop at the time of the accident.

According to a state police report, the accident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. when a Nissan Pathfinder operated by Caitlyn Clark, 26, of Nazareth, traveling east on Race Street, left the roadway, traveling onto the grassy area on the south side of the road.

The SUV struck a utility pole and four men waiting at the bus stop, including Elias Tabarani, 51, of Allentown, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and 28-year-old Angel Bosch of Easton, who died later at an area hospital, police said.

Injured and taken to area hospitals for treatment, along with Clark, were Angel Guerrido-Lopez, 38, of Allentown, and Lawrence Oyster, 37, of Allentown.

"We had the MedEvac chopper standing by, but we didn't need it," Yoder said. "The state police took control of the site around 4:30."

The accident occurred where Cascade Drive intersects Race Street. Cascade Drive is one of two streets that serve warehouses along Race Street between Willowbrook and Airport roads.

Race Street has LANTA bus service for workers employed at the warehouses. For buses traveling west along Race, there are designated shelters and bus stops. Going east, the roadway's berm drops off steeply to the flat airport property where aircraft are serviced and stored on the other side of the fence.

Outside the fence, along the roadway, there is no visible flat area for a formal bus stop or a boarding lane on the east side of busy Race Street. The eastbound bus picks up passengers gathered along the south side of Race Street at Cascade Street and has a similar arrangement at Fashion Drive.

"The airport owns the land on that [south] side of Race Street," said John Martucci, Hanover Township's maintenance supervisor, who was at the scene.

The site across from Cascade Street has been an informal bus stop location for years without a standard bus shelter.

Yoder said in addition to Han-Le-Co, the Catasauqua Fire Department and Hanover Township Fire Department of Northampton County were at the scene. Among the emergency medical responders were Centronia and Northampton Regional units.

PP&L was on the scene to remove low-hanging wires that straddled Race Street. Electric and telephone service to the warehouses was interrupted. Three utility poles could be seen as physically damaged.

The road remained closed for several hours while repairs were made and state police investigated.
