Two brothers attain Eagle Scout rank

A family tradition was continued as twins Michael and Matthew Calderon joined the 42 other Eagle Scouts of Troop 51. The brothers were elevated to Eagle Scouts at an Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony at The Presbyterian Church of Catasauqua Aug. 25.

Michael and Matthew Calderon joined their older brothers, Aaron and Kris Silfies as Eagle Scouts.

Family and friends listened intently as the story of their journey to Eagle was described.

The twins began their Scouting career in March of 2007 and made it to Tenderfoot in August of the same year.

Both earned their Second Class ranking in March of 2008 and First Class ranking in November of the same year.

Michael worked as the senior patrol leader and Matthew worked as the assistant senior patrol leader. Both are currently assistant Scoutmasters and are members of the Order of The Arrow.

For their Eagle Scout projects, Michael and Matthew worked on making some improvements at the property of the Presbyterian Church of Catasauqua.

Matthew constructed two small signs announcing the location of the church. One is located on Race Street and he is attempting to have the other placed on Canal Road.

He also built two event signs from alumalite. These signs will make it easier for the church to post announcements. He also repainted the bottom half of the black wrought-iron fence.

"We talked with the church about the signs, it had multiple events on it and I wanted to make it easier to read and maneuver," he said.

Matthew had the help of his fellow Scouts, friends and family to complete his project, which took a month.

"When we started I didn't think I could finish it, but after it was complete I felt proud of what I accomplished," he said.

Michael's project benefited the church in a different way. He painted the church parking lot along with the handicap spaces, curbing, railing, chain-link fence and entrance poles. He also planted flowers outside the church.

"I noticed that you couldn't see the lines painted on the handicap parking spot," he said. "I asked the church if I could do it and they said yes."

Michael completed his project with the help of his troop, family and friends.

The painting process took around 150 hours.

"I felt proud that I was a good leader and proud of the help of my troop, family and friends to complete my Eagle rank," he said.

While Boy Scout Troop 52 meets at St. Lawrence Church in North Catasauqua, the court of honor was held at the Presbyterian Church where their Eagel projects were completed.

Both are recent graduates of Catasauqua High School.

Matthew plans to attend a program at St. Luke's Hospital to become a surgical technician. Michael is currently studying culinary arts at Northampton Community College.

The Calderons plan to continue working within the Boy Scouts as assistant Scoutmasters. The twins said they want to help guide other members of the troop to become Eagle Scouts as well.

Their parents are named Robert Barrow and Diane Bleier. They live in Catasauqua.

The First Presbyterian Church is located in Catasauqua on Second and Pine Street.
