It's a case of cats helping dogs.

On behalf of the Coplay Feral Cat Committee, resident Joan Jacoby, donated $50 to Coplay Borough to be used toward the costs of improving the borough's dog kennel.

The topic came up at council's Sept. 4 workshop.

Public Works Director Dan Pavelko reported crews installed a concrete floor to replace the dirt floor of the borough's dog kennel.

Crews are also constructing a roof.

Feeding dishes that can be filled from outside the kennel will be added as further improvements.

According to Coplay Police Chief Vincent Genovese, Coplay doesn't have a tremendous stray dog problem. So far this year, Coplay held three stray dogs.

The borough is required by law to retain stray and unclaimed dogs for 48 hours before turning them over to an animal shelter.

"What are you doing for stray cats in Coplay?" Jacoby asked. "We [Coplay residents] are only allowed five cats per household. Do you have a little room for stray cats?"

"We don't have a resource for stray cats," Genovese said.

Jacoby added that Peaceable Kingdom in Whitehall is not currently accepting cats due to high volume.

"The borough is not accepting cats," Genovese said. "The humane society does not want to take our animals."
