Boys soccer stays perfect

While the high school soccer season is no more than two weeks old, there is one thing the Parkland boys soccer team has yet to experience - losing.

Last Friday's 3-0 victory over Northampton has the Trojans sitting at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play in the early going.

Maybe more importantly is the fact that the Trojans have now opened up their division play with victories over Nazareth and the Konkrete Kids (0-3, 0-1).

"This is a big win for us because they're in our [division] with Whitehall and Nazareth," said senior Nick Hutchinson. "So to get the first leg up on them in one of the two meetings it means a lot."

In a scoreless game midway through the first half, the Trojans had an opportunity on a deep free kick to get on the scoreboard and Hutchinson wasted literally no time at his shot when lining up for the attempt.

Moments after the ball was set and the Konkrete Kids' defense was preparing for the shot, Hutchinson's blast found its way through the defense and into the left side of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

"Matt Kleinhenz, he noticed it. He was like, 'Hey he's not looking,'" said Hutchinson. "So then I just hit it and just fortunately it went in."

Fast forward to the second half and it was Hutchinson again creating opportunities on the field - this time with his passing. Hutchinson's pass found senior Collin McConnell, who then connected on a goal to the right side of the net at the 32:24 mark.

The defense, which has been solid all season, was stingy again against the Konkrete Kids. They allowed just two shots on goal, both coming in the second half of play. The Trojans have allowed just one goal in their three games.

"That helps a lot because if our defense holds up then that just leaves the pressure to the offense to score," said Hutchinson. "So if they're doing their job it's fine, we'll still get a point out of it. But we always want to win and score."

Kleinhenz added a goal for the Trojans, while McConnell finished with an assist to go along with his score.

On Thursday the Trojans will host Liberty, ending the team's stretch of three games in three days that started on Tuesday against Whitehall. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

"It just keeps getting us to move forward and work harder," said Hutchinson. "Because now we know we have a target on our back if we keep winning. So everyone is going to circle us on their schedule if we keep up this record. We just have to keep up the intensity in practice and it'll carry on through games."
