Coplay column: Borough asks residents to display flags Sept. 11

As the Borough of Coplay joins with the nation next Tuesday in remembering the thousands of lives lost on Sept. 11, borough officials are asking residents to display U.S. flags.

Flags can be small or large and flown on porches or lawns. Fewer flags have been flown each passing year since the tragedy.

Although the borough no longer has luminaria packages available, the Sept. 11 project "Light Up Your Neighborhood" continues.

Residents need only a paper bag, candle and sand or litter to balance the candles. Place them in front of the home or walkway as dusk sets in.

The fall parade hosted this year by Coplay Recreation & Welfare has a military theme which will pay homage to the many lives lost on that fateful day.

Got skunks?

The Coplay Town Watch has formed a small committee charged with trapping skunks in Coplay at no cost to the homeowner. The Skunk Relocation Committee will humanely trap and release the skunk. This is a neighbors helping neighbors effort.

The Skunk Relocation Committee trapped its first skunk Saturday and relocated it Sunday.

Residents can also borrow a trap from the borough for a deposit of $25.

Call Bill Leiner Jr. or email billleiner@aol.com to have a skunk situation evaluated.

One of the last major outdoor events of the summer is set for Saturday when the American Club of Coplay holds its annual family picnic.

Hundreds of people will gather at the club's pavilion and grounds for the event, which will feature live music, a wide array of food, pony rides, train rides and other activities that are sure to keep the children busy.
