Longtime Catasauqua Borough Councilman Alfred Regits has been honored as a new member of the Catasauqua Hall of Fame. The official announcement was made at a free outdoor concert sponsored by the borough.
Several months ago, Catasauqua Borough Council President Brian Bartholomew informally decided to invigorate the borough's hall of fame.
The names of past honorees are engraved on pavers set in front of the Catasauqua Park & Playground's amphitheater.
The borough council elected Regits to the hall of fame for 2012. Mayor Barbara Schlegel led off the Aug. 24 ceremony before the last concert of the summer with a brief speech citing a few of the many contributions Regits has made to the community.
"He has served on council for 36 years and was instrumental in developing this park as we see it today," she said. The award was a surprise for Regits.
According to Bartholomew, the paver will be set in place in time for a dedication at the borough's Arbor Day celebration in April 2013.
"The rules say that you can only honor two people every year," Bartholomew told The Press after the brief ceremony at the park. "I want to get some nominations in for next year."
Following the ceremony, residents sat on blankets and in lawn chairs to hear a concert by The Riffters.
