Resident joins Peace Corps
Elizabeth Hamscher Shaffer, 23, daughter of Jeanne E. Hamscher, of Emmaus, was accepted into the Peace Corps and departed for Burkina Faso in June to begin pre-service training as a Rural Development Agent Peace Corps Volunteer. Upon graduation from volunteer training in September, Shaffer will begin her work developing sustainable agricultural and lifestyle techniques for the region. Hamscher is a graduate of Emmaus High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Ohio State University.

Local student wins competition
Ryan Holihan, of Allentown, was part of a team of eight engineers that placed second in the 2012 Roboboat Competition, an international robotics challenge sponsored by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International and the U.S. Office of Naval Research. Holihan graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the College of Engineering at Villanova University.

Shanlae Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Jackson, of Lower Macungie, received a Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors' Scholarship. Jackson is a graduate of Emmaus High School where she was active in the Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society. Jackson plans to major in exercise science.
Steven Taveras, son of Mr. and Mrs. Taveras, of Lower Macungie, received a Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors' Scholarship. Taveras is a graduate of Emmaus High School and plans to major in finance.
Local student receives scholarship
Cecilia Loughlin, a student at Moravian Academy, is the winner of the 43rd annual national Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship Competition. Loughlin was a Rotary International Exchange Student who lived in Taiwan and studied Mandarin Chinese. She is an athlete, a member of Model UN, Model Congress and Every 15 Minutes. Loughlin works with the yearbook, PA Junior Academy of Science, Scholastic Scrimmage, was an intern for the NY Department of Health and was selected for Lehigh University's Entrepreneurship international business program. She plans to attend University of Notre Dame.
