Logan Steigerwalt, Nathaniel Xander become Eagle Scouts

Family and friends filled the seats of Hope Lutheran Church in Cherryville, Aug. 4 to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Logan Steigerwalt and Nathaniel Xander.

They now join the 47 other Eagle Scouts of Troop 15.

"Only one in four boys in America will become a Scout," said Scoutmaster Thomas Galloway. "But it is interesting to know that of the leaders of this nation in business, religion and politics, three out of four were Scouts."

Both Steigerwalt and Xander joined the Scouts in April 2006. They worked through the different rankings of Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life before reaching Eagle Scout.

Steigerwalt held many leadership positions. He worked as a chaplain aide, guide, junior assistant Scoutmaster and senior patrol leader. Steigerwalt also received the Firem'n Chit and Totin' Chip awards.

Xander held many leadership positions such as guide, instructor, junior assistant Scoutmaster, patrol leader and quarter master. Xander also received special awards including the Firem'n Chit and Paul Bunyan Woodsman awards.

To reach the rank of Eagle Scout both completed a project.

Steigerwalt worked on the Three Ponds Trail at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center for his eagle project. He rebuilt a bridge and cleaned up the path.

"I hiked there a lot and the trail was steep and the bridge was overflowing," he said.

The project took two days to complete.

The best part of his project is "seeing the end product and how it could help the trail," said Steigerwalt.

Xander rebuilt the benches outside of Hope Lutheran Church. They are used for outdoor services or weddings. It took 50 hours to complete the project.

"I happened to see that the benches weren't in good condition," said Xander. "I thought it would be good to rebuild them."

The best part of the project is "seeing the end product and being proud of the work I completed," he said.

Steigerwalt, 17, is a senior at Northampton Area High School and plans on joining the Air Force after school.

Xander, 16, is a senior at Northampton Area High School and plans on attending college after graduation.
