Trucker dies in U. Macungie crash

A 31-year-old Perry County man was killed in a tractor-trailer crash around 3:50 a.m. Aug. 6 on I-78 East, Upper Macungie Township.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim says Lucas M. Cramer of Duncannon was pronounced dead at 5:44 a.m. at the scene by Deputy Coroner Richard Kroon.

An autopsy was scheduled for Aug. 7 to determine the exact cause of death, Grim said.

State Police Troop M Fogelsville say James T. Sherry, 70, of Ebensburg, Cambria County, was driving a 1997 International 9800 tractor-trailer when he entered the right lane of I-78 East from the south shoulder of the roadway.

Police say Cramer was driving a 2013 Freightliner CST120 in the right, eastbound lane behind Sherry's tractor-trailer.

Sherry's rig traveled approximately three-quarters of a mile east in the right lane when Cramer's truck hit the rear end of Sherry's tractor-trailer combo, police say.

Both tractor-trailers traveled approximately 308 feet southeast across the south shoulder of the eastbound lane and down an embankment.

Cramer's truck became engulfed in flames, police say.

Sherry, who police say was wearing aseat belt, was uninjured.

Troopers with State Police Troop M, Fogelsville, and Troop L, Hamburg; State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist Unit; Fogelsville, Trexlertown, Upper Macungie, Lower Macungie, Tri-Clover and Weisenberg fire departments, Cetronia Ambulance Corps and Hauser's Towing assisted at the scene.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed this crash is asked to contact Trooper DeAngeles at 610-395-1433.
