Recycle electronics Aug. 18

The Borough of Northampton is hosting its first ever electronic recycling event.

It will take place 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, in front of the municipal building at Laubach Avenue and Smith Lane.

According to Borough Manager Gene Zarayko, any electronic item with a cord will be accepted. The public is invited to bring used laptops, computers, television sets and any other equipment they want to discard.

Zarayko added the event is "completely free."

Volunteers will be on hand to assist.

The borough manager said the borough also will accept old car batteries and tires. The tires will be used for fuel in the Lafarge Cement Company kilns.

In other business, Zarayko said the borough is again submitting a formal application for a $50,000 county grant from gaming receipts. The borough has been turned down twice in its efforts to secure funding from the gaming receipts from Sands.

Noting some municipalities have fared well in winning approval for their gaming grant applications, Zarayko said the borough expects to use the grant money for a new generator at the borough community center. The community center is used as an emergency public center should such a need arise.

The borough does not expect a decision until sometime in early 2013.
