Catasauqua bakery creates a treat for area pageant winner
It's not every 7-year-old who has a cupcake created and sold in her honor, but Catasauqua bakery Blondies has done just that for Laela Moyer. The Whitehall girl is the reigning winner of a pageant in Piscataway, N.J., called Pieces of Me.
Rebecca Zukowski, owner of the Catasauqua cupcake shop, worked with Laela to create a new cupcake called Laela's Pageant Princess.
The new cupcake was unveiled at the Front Street cupcake bakery and restaurant July 20.
Laela selected elements of the cupcake design herself and Blondies took it from there. The completed cupcake is a vanilla and hot-pink sprinkle confetti cake, topped with pink and yellow frosting, sprinkled with pink glitter and crowned with a pixy stick.
The pink and yellow frosting represent the colors of the dresses Laela wore during her pageant competitions and the pixy sticks were a favorite treat of the pageant competitiors.
Laela said the key to winning pageants is simply to smile.
"You always have to smile," she said. "If you don't, you'll get points taken off."
Regarding her most recent pageant victory, she said she enjoyed the experience.
"It was really fun going on stage," she said. "It felt great. It gets to show who you are."
Laela, who was adorned in a yellow pageant dress and crown for the cupcake presentation, said she was surprised to have a cupcake created in her honor. It's a tradition for her to have a Blondies cupcake before competing.
"It feels good to have a cupcake made for me," she said. "It's been my good luck tradition to eat one before my competitions."
In September and October Laela will participate in two more pageants in Harrisburg. She will also take part in the opening production of the October Halloween pageant.
"I'm so proud of her," said her mother, Lauren McDonough of Whitehall. "She's such a good little girl."
Her grandmother, Carlene Moyer of Catasauqua, is also proud of young Laela.
"It's just so exciting for us to see her on stage," she said.
Laela said she hopes to become a veterinarian and treat abused animals when she grows up.
