NW harriers compete at DSU Invitational

The Northwestern Lehigh cross country teams competed in their second invitational of the 2019 season last weekend.

The Tiger girls team took sixth place out of 26 teams Saturday at the DeSales University Centaur Invitational, while Northwestern’s boys team ran to 11th place out of 33 teams.

Freshman Angelina Klein led the way for the Lady Tigers, finishing 21st overall out of field of 187 runners. Klein ran the course in 20:50. Senior Allinson Costa (21:04.5) wasn’t far behind in 25th place, followed by teammates junior Kailyn Jones (42nd, 21:58.2), freshman Maci Fisher (55th, 22:22.3) and sophomore Nicole Landes (107th, 24:00.7) rounding out the top five. Claire Costa (108th, 24:04.7) and Alexis Vennera (130th, 25:00.8) were also part of the Northwestern girls varsity team at the meet.

Northwestern’s boys team was also led by a freshman. Sam Bower, who took first place in the two-mile middle school race at last year’s DeSales meet, finished 36th Saturday with a time of 17:46. The rest of the Tigers’ top five included sophomore Cole Chukoskie (18:11.7), freshman Matthew Santana (67th, 18:22), RJ Zack (76th, 18:33.4) and sophomore Joseph Chukoskie (18:50.7). Sophomore Nathan Vincent (105th, 19:08) and Joseph Pleban (135ht, 19:38.7) also ran in the varsity race for Northwestern.

Downingtown East took the boys team title with 62 points. Twin Valley (102) and Central Bucks South (135) finished second and third.

The highest-finishing Colonial League team was Southern Lehigh in fifth place.

Liberty’s Cole Frank won the boys race, finishing in 16:11.4, 15 seconds in front of second-place Alex Kane (Southern Lehigh). Noah Taylor (Twin Valley) was third, followed by Salisbury’s Shane Artis.

Emmaus won the girls team title at DeSales. The Hornets had 79 points, while second-place Exeter came in at 97. Liberty took third place.

Southern Lehigh (223) was the top-finisher of Colonial League girls teams Saturday, taking fifth place and edging the Tigers (234) by just 11 points.
