The 2019 Parkland Trojans girls tennis season is over, but it won’t be soon forgotten. The Trojans finished 14-0 in East Penn Conference regular season play and 16-1 overall. Then came the postseason.

“It was a great season,” said coach Mike Hingston. “We won a lot of championships this year.”

The Trojans won the EPC regular season title, the EPC tournament, and made it to the District 11 finals in singles and doubles and won the team title.

“We just had a great group of kids,” the coach said. “We had a lot of seniors on this team and they really did a lot for our program over the years. They left behind a great legacy.”

Coming into the 2019 campaign, Hingston wanted his team to “be among the top three or four teams in the EPC.”

“As the season progressed we just kept improving,” he said. “We had to reassess that.”

Depth was the key to the Trojans outstanding season. But senior Joanna Wu was the team’s leader. Perhaps no one improved or played at such a consistently high level as Wu.

“This girl is just such a competitor,” said her coach. “She does not give up.”

“The reason why I enjoy tennis so much is because of my coaches and my friends,” Wu said after the team’s District 11 title. “Everyone has supported me so much along the way. No matter whether I win or lose, tennis is such an enjoyable sport.”

Number two singles player senior Jessica Tseo displayed a solid, all-around game to overwhelm most opponents.

Freshman Leah Zolotareva played number three singles. Her inexperience on a tennis court was mitigated by her desire to never give up.

“She is fearless,” said Hingston. “She is quiet and unassuming and just comes to work every day. Leah is absolutely without ego.”

The doubles work by the Trojans resembled an assembly line machine. The tandem of freshman Erin Joo and Anshika Gupta worked well throughout the campaign. Parkland also received nice play from Sophia Lee and Maya Paul and the doubles team of sophomore Kaila Miles and junior Anabel Stein. Senior Punya Bhasin and senior Emma Halpin also played well during the year.

“It was just a total team effort,” said Hingston.
