Pates Malek Mims hits 1,000 points

Freedom’s Malek Mims wrote his name in the history books last week as well, joining his brother Caleb, one the short list of 1,000 point scorers in school history.

Mims broke the list in last week’s 62-58 loss to Liberty, scoring 21 points in the loss to eclipse the century mark.

In Monday’s loss to Easton, Mims added 16 points to his total, giving him 1,029 career points, putting him fifth on the all-time list.

He’ll likely pass Nick Discolo’s 1,034 points in Friday’s EPC tournament contest, pushing him to fourth all-time on the career scoring list for Patriots.

He’s also second all-time on the steals list with 236, behind Discolo’s 250. It is a number that he could surpass if the Pates get enough postseason games under their belts.

Caleb Mims continues his climb in the scoring race, as he currently has 1,111 career points, good for second all-time behind Luis Ortiz 1,225 career points.

Caleb is also the school’s all-time leader in three pointers with 125 made in his career.

With Malek surpassing the 1,000 point mark last week, it was a special occasion for the brother duo to be apart of such elite company.

“Malek is a special player and person,” said head coach Joe Stellato. “Both he and his brother have worked so hard to get to this point, and I am so proud of them for that. They do things right on and off the court and that will go a long way in life. We have only five players in school history that have reached this milestone and to have two of them on the court at the same time makes it very special for everyone involved.”
