FHS swimmers fall to Southern Lehigh

Freedom’s swim team hosted Southern Lehigh last Thursday when the Spartans defeated the Patriots, 116-70 (girls), and 113-46 (boys).

Top swims for the Patriots included a second place finish for Sage Hillier, Aliah Corrado, Abby Burnette and Sydney Straka in the 200 medley relay in 2:01.88, and Andrew Ehret, Eric Mann, Danny Connell and Luke McClure who were also second in the medley relay with a time of 1:50.61.

“In the fly, I took the lead and Sydney was anchoring,” said Burnette. “It was a really good race and we all swam our hardest.”

Hillier and Ehret placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:36.69 and 2:08.03, respectively.

Sophie Twiggar placed second in the 50 free in 27.27, and Straka was third in 27.96. McClure was second for the boys in the 50 free in 24.45.

Sarah Gill won the diving event with a score of 213.05.

Burnette won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.70, and McClure won the fly for the boys in 59.55.

“In the beginning, we were right with each other and then in the back half, I really picked it up on my turns,” said Burnette.

Burnette, Straka, Corrado, and Twiggar combined to take second in the 200 free relay in 1:52.22.

McClure, Mann, Connell, and Ehret also took second place in the 200 free relay in 1:39.82.

“The only thing was trying not to breathe so I could go a little faster and try to catch him,” said Ehret who was out touched by Solehi’s Hunter Smith.

Ehret competed in the 100 backstroke right after the relay and finished third in 59.13.

“I was a little bit tired from the relay because it was a sprint at the 50,” he said.

Burnette won the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.98, and Connell won the same event for the boys in 1:10.62.

“In practice, we’re working on my stroke and picking up my tempo sooner,” said Burnette. “I think every day when we work our push offs and our break outs, it helps us in the bigger races.”

Hallie Smith, Lilly Anderson, Twiggar, and Deborah Belen came in second in the 400 free relay in 4:25.37.

Freedom will host Stroudsburg on Thursday.
