Lehigh Valley’s Carpenter Cup softball team had a short run in this year’s tournament after losing two of its three games on Tuesday.

Lehigh Valley’s strong start, a 10-0 mercy rule victory over PCCAF (Philadelphia Charter Catholic Academy and Friends) gave way to Delaware North’s strong finish in its 7-0 victory over Lehigh Valley.

Salisbury’s Emily Silberman was Lehigh Valley’s starting pitcher, and Bethlehem Catholic’s Addison Roche knocked in the first two runs of the day for Lehigh Valley.

“I swung at the first pitch because our coaches told us it would be the best pitch we would see,” said Roche, who hit a line drive up the middle. “I was just excited and proud. I was happy because I contributed to the win.”

Whitehall’s Abbey Reese also had 2 RBIs with her triple in the bottom of the third. By that time, Lehigh Valley led PCCAF, 8-0.

Freedom’s Jennifer Slanovec ended the game with a 2 RBI single in the fifth inning.

“It definitely gave us confidence, and it was a great way to start off the day,” said Roche.

Lehigh Valley played its second game against Mid Penn, which Lehigh Valley lost, 4-1.

Mid Penn took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, Lehigh Valley scored one run on an RBI double by Bangor’s Morgan Karasek.

Mid Penn scored its third run in the fifth inning and its fourth run in the sixth.

“Our hitting wasn’t as strong as it was in the first game, and their pitchers were hitting their spots and had a lot of movement,” Roche said.

Lehigh Valley then lost its third game to Delaware North, 7-0.

Delaware North’s biggest inning came in the fifth with a bases-loaded triple.

“It was upsetting because I thought we could have done a lot better than we did, but our coach was proud we could be here to represent the Lehigh Valley,” said Roche.

Lehigh Valley’s Carpenter Cup softball team was coached by Blake Morgan, Ed Stinner, Kyle Stinner, and Jim Haney.

“The last two games, we couldn’t string hits together, and we faced really good pitchers,” said Morgan. “Madi [Cunningham] was robbed of two hits on really good defensive plays, and we had some errors that helped them. But we hit the ball hard, and that’s just a credit to the girls.”
