LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Grab a book and a snack

George Wolf Elementary School strives to keep its students learning during the long months of summer.

First-grade teacher Jen Horn came up with the idea for an outdoor library, where students had the opportunity to donate and borrow books each week while enjoying snacks and drinks with classmates. With the help of faculty and students, the school, 300 Allen St., Bath, was able to pull off this event 10 a.m.-noon every Tuesday of the summer.

Individuals were eager to make this event a success. Stores like Wawa and Wegmans generously donated snacks and drinks for participants, and the school’s Student Council worked tirelessly to sort through books donated by teachers and students’ families.

Chris Bodnar, an emotional support teacher at the elementary school, even built two large bookshelves for the library. Time, effort and promoting the event helped the outdoor library come to life.

“We sent home letters with the students during the school year and shared information on our Facebook page,” first-grade teacher Cheri Voth said. “There was a lot of word-of-mouth promoting.”

Students enjoyed picking out their favorite books each week and were able to borrow as many as they wanted - free of charge.

This event was not only fun, teachers and students agreed, but a great way to encourage continued reading over the summer.
