High School Musicals: Liberty

Hope and resourcefulness meet the challenges of 19th century dreariness and squalor in a London poorhouse when "Oliver!" is presented at 7 p.m. March 20, 21, 22 in the auditorium of Liberty High School, 1115 Linden St., Bethlehem.

The musical is directed by Mark McKenna. Music director is Allen Frank. Vocal director is Gayle Justice.

Brave and resourceful Oliver (Devon McDowell) struggles with poverty and the evil thief-master Fagin (Drew Donaher), along with a cast of colorful characters: Bet (Kali McCornac), Nancy (Kayla Mulkern), Artful Dodger (Noah Reichard) and Mr. Bumble (Cameron Haines).

The play is based on the 1838 novel, "Oliver Twist," by Charles Dickens.

The show premiered in London's West End in 1960 and was produced on Broadway in 1963, receiving three Tonys, including original score.

The 1968 movie version directed by Carol Reed received six Oscars, including picture.

Lionel Bart wrote the music and lyrics for "Oliver!"

Songs include "Food, Glorious, Food," "Consider Yourself," "I'd Do Anything," "As Long as He Needs Me" and "Where is Love?"
