James C. Knappenberger

James C. Knappenberger, 77, of Breinigsville, was fatally injured Feb. 10, 2014, in a traffic accident.

Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Clinton A. and Ruth M. (Schell) Knappenberger.

He owned furniture stores in Northampton and Slatington, was affiliated with the former TV Asscociates retail store in Whitehall, and was known as "The Mattress Man" at his Poland, N.Y., business.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a member of Robert M. Fegely VFW Post 8282, Breinigsville.

He loved his family and enjoyed fishing and collecting glassware and antiques.

His survivors include daughters, Diana, wife of Michael Vavreck, of Reading, Suzanne Knappenberger of Macungie, Renee, wife of Wayne Evans, of Bethlehem, Kathleen, wife of William Wenz II, Stacy Schnellman, and Christine Seaman, all of Breinigsville; sister Carol Williamson Hamm, wife of Richard Hamm of Allentown; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and former wife, Shirley (Wasco) Balatinicz of Reading.

He was predeceased by his companion, Susan Cirtwell, and a grandson, William J. Wenz III.
