So. Parkland 110s fall in OT
The South Parkland 110-pound A team's season came to a heart-breaking end on Saturday when the Trojans fell 6-0 in overtime by the Lower Macungie Mustangs in the semifinals of the SYFL playoffs.
Both teams battled all afternoon in a hard-hitting defensive struggle. After a scoreless first half, the Trojan defense forced back-to-back turnovers in the third quarter on interceptions by Devin Yeomans and Ryan Zolotsky. The Trojan offense, however, was unable to capitalize on the resulting good field position, as it was stopped both times by the aggressive Mustang defense.
After a Ryan Hoffman punt pinned Lower Macungie on its own five-yard line on the last play of the third quarter, the Mustang offense finally began to wear down the Trojan defense. The Mustangs ate up the entire fourth quarter on a 19-play, 89-yard drive that ultimately would result in no points due to a tremendous goal line stand by the Trojan defense in the final minute of regulation. The Trojan defense stopped the Mustangs on four straight plays from inside the five, getting huge stops from Trent Perkins, Jack Perkins, Zolotsky, Yeomans, Mason Holaska, JT Siggins, Asher Reede, Evan Kopenhaver, Richard Kerrick, Jared Mickley, Tanner Lewis, Mason Bergstein and Nick Johnston.
In overtime, after the Trojans were unable to score, Lower Macugnie punched in the game winning touchdown on third down on a five-yard pass from Baily O'Connor to Carlton Lovett.
The Mustangs advance to the SYFL 110-pound championship game where they will face the undefeated Bethlehem Bulldogs. The Trojans finished the season with a 9-1 record in the SYFL (11-1 overall) and the 110-pound American Division Championship. For the season, the Trojans defense recorded nine shutouts, while the Trojan offense outscored its opponents 244-26.
