The South Parkland 110-pound A team clinched the SYFL American Division championship with a hard-fought, come-from-behind 21-14 victory over the North Parkland Buffaloes on Sunday afternoon at Grange Field.

After the Buffaloes struck first with a 39-yard touchdown run from Drew Johannes, the Trojans answered with a four-yard touchdown pass from Vincent Gerbasio to Harper Puckett. George Hlavac tied the game at 7-7 by converting the extra point on a three-yard reception from Gerbasio.

On its next possession, North Parkland took a 14-7 lead into the half on a five-yard Johannes touchdown run.

Trailing for the first time all season at the half, the Trojans came out strong in the second half. Aaron Watson alertly recovered the Buffalo onside kick to start the half, giving the Trojans excellent field position. Late in the third quarter, South Parkland found the end zone on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Gerbasio to Bryan Bertsch. Jack Perkins converted the game-tying point after on a three-yard reception.

The Trojan defense held the Buffaloes to a four-and-out on its next offensive possession, giving the Trojan offense great field position on the Buffalo 44 yard line. Needing a score to win, the Trojans turned to their running game. Behind the power blocking of Evan Kopenhaver, Richard Kerrick, Jered Fenstermaker, JT Siggins, Jared Mickley and John Hohenshilt, South Parkland ran the ball five consecutive times to the Buffalo one-yard line. The big run on the drive was a 25-yard scamper by Trent Perkins.

On third and goal from the one, the Trojans scored the game-winning touchdown on a short pass from Gerbasio to Jack Perkins. Hlavac added the point after conversion with an eight-yard reception.

The Trojan defense dominated the entire second half of the game, holding North Parkland to no first downs. The defense was led by Trent Perkins (nine tackles), Nick Johnston (eight tackles, interception), JT Siggins (six tackles), and Mason Holaska (interception). Also contributing strong efforts for the Trojan defense were Ryan Zolotsky, Richard Kerrick, Tanner Lewis, Asher Reede, Devin Yeomans, Mason Bergstein and Ryan Hoffman.

Gerbasio finished the day 12-of-19 passing for 95 yards and three touchdowns. Trent Perkins led the ground attack with 68 yards. Puckett (30 yards), Yeomans (17 yards), and Reede (11 yards) also had key runs throughout the game. Jack Perkins led the Trojan receivers with five catches for 35 yards, followed by Bertsch (25 yards), Trent Perkins (20 yards), Hlavac (11 yards), and Puckett (four yards).

Johannes had one of the extra point runs for North Parkland, while Luke Dauberman connected with Austin Imler on the other.

The Trojans improved to 7-0 on the season.

The 95-pound game pitted two evenly matched teams against each other in a defensive struggle.

The game went into overtime without either team putting any points on the scoreboard. Offensively, the Trojans had long runs by Jordan Lewis and Cade Clancy and a long pass play from Lewis to Blake Barthol, but they could not punch the ball into the end zone.

The Trojans' staunch defense allowed minimal running or passing yardage by North Parkland. Cole Kratzer, Alexander Morales and Tommy Salako led South Parkland in tackles and Brett Cipolla made a key interception in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

The North Parkland defense was led by Ty Tremba, Isiah Rico-Gray, Matt Geroulo and Josh Wieder.

In overtime, the Trojan and the North Parkland defenses held strong against the opposing offenses ending the game in a tie.
